ABOUT NATIONAL LIBRARY

After the independence of India, the National Library came into being in place of Imperial Library by the “Imperial Library (Change of Name) Act” in 1948. It was accorded a special status of an institution of national importance in the Article 62 in the Seventh Schedule of the Union list of the Constitution of India and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the then Union Minister of Education opened the Library to Public on 1st February 1953.

NATIONAL LIBRARY CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY 2020 THROUGH ONLINE YOGA WORKSHOP

National Library celebrated International Yoga Day 2020 though a Online Yoga Workshop in collaboration with Heartfullness. Ms.E.Gajalakshmi, ALIO introduced the Organisation and  explained about the programme. Dr.K.K.Kochukoshy,OSD, National Library delivered a welcome address. Dr.Partha Sarathi Das, ALIO administrator of the GotoMeeting app hosted the whole program. The program was also attended by the Officers and Staff Members of the Library. The online demonstration of yogic postures was followed by a lively interaction of the participants with the resource persons. Around 50 participants attended in the said Workshop.Mr.Akhlaque Ahmad, ALIO delivered vote of thanks.


 

Webinar on "The Evidence of Sangam Tamil Corpus of Literature in Tracking the Post-Indus Legacies"under Ek Bharath Shreshta Bharat Program

  NATIONAL LIBRARY OF INDIA ORGANIZED  WEBINAR ON TAMIL SANGAM LITERATURE

National Library of India organized a Webinar on "The Evidence of Sangam Tamil Corpus of Literature in Tracking the Post-Indus Legacies" on June 27, 2020 at 4.00 to 5:30 PM through  through video conferencing mode. Dr. R.Balakrishnan, IAS (Retd.), Indus Researcher delivered a lecture on the said topic. Dr. Balakrishnan discussed about place names in ancient Tamil Sangam literature are associated with surnames and reflects the history and culture of TamilNadu. Ms.E.Gajalakshmi, ALIO introduced the speaker and  explained about the programme. Dr.K.K.Kochukoshy,OSD, National Library delivered a welcome address.The program was also attended by the Officers and National Library Interns. The deliberation was followed by a lively interaction of the participants with the resource person. The Around 100 participants from different parts in India participated in the said webinar.Dr.Partha Sarathi Das, ALIO administrator of the GotoMeeting app hosted the whole program and delivered the Vote of Thanks.
About the Speaker
Dr.R.Balakrishnan was born in the village Natham near Madurai in Tamilnadu. He had his graduation and Post Graduation in Tamil Literature. He is a Former Civil servant, Poet, Writer and Researcher. He served as an IAS officer in Odisha Cadre and retired in 2018 after 34 years of his service. At present he is the Chief Advisor, Office of the Chief Minister, Government of Odisha. He is an Indologist and has been working in this field for the last 30 years. He was awarded Doctor of Letters (Honoris causa) by Periyar Maniammai Deemed to be University, Thanjavur for his contribution in the field of Indology and particularly his work on Indus Valley Civilization. He is the Honorary Consultant of Indus Research Centre, Chennai founded by Iravatham Mahadevan. His publications are Anbulla Amma (1991), Siragukkul Vaanam (2012), Nattukural (2016), Irandam Sutru (2018), Kunrena Nimirndhu Nill (2018), Panmaya Kalvan (2018) and Journey of Civilization: from Indus to Vaigai (2019) which attracted wide attention across the globe in this year. He is a lyricist and his album inspired by “Thirukkural” is a huge success.

  NATIONAL LIBRARY OF INDIA ORGANIZED  WEBINAR ON OPTICAL CHARACTER RECOGNITION

National Library of India organized a Webinar on "Developments with Optical Character Recognition for Printed Bangla at the British Library" on July 9, 2020 at 4.00 to 5:30 PM through video conferencing mode.Mr.Tom Derrick, Digital Curator,Two Centuries of Indian Print British Library, London delivered a lecture on the said topic. He discussed about the development of OCR for Bengali language and also for some of the Indian languages. Ms.E.Gajalakshmi, ALIO introduced the speaker and  explained about the programme. Shri P.L.Sahu, Director General, National Library delivered the welcome address.  Dr.K.K.Kochukoshy,OSD also briefed the audience about the program. Dr.Partha Sarathi Das, ALIO administrator of the GotoMeeting app hosted the whole program. The deliberation was followed by a lively interaction of the participants with the resource person. The Around 150 participants from different parts in India were participated in the said webinar.Mr.Akhlaque Ahmad, ALIO delivered vote of thanks.

About the Speaker:

Tom is a member of the Two Centuries of Indian Print project that will digitise and make available rare Indian books held at the British Library, London. He is interested in the creation of datasets through exploring OCR technologies and supporting researchers applying digital research methods to the collection.Prior to joining the British Library, Tom gained several years of experience across editorial development, production and marketing functions for an academic publisher of digital learning resources, collaborating with an international array of libraries to digitise their collections.



Celebration of Sankalparva


 NATIONAL LIBRARY CELEBRATES SANKALPPARVA
National Libary of India participated on the #Sankalp Parva campaign of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, from June 28, 2020 to July 12, 2020. During this period, National Library has conducted plantation program of trees as recommended by the Ministry of Culture. Basically the plants which had been identified by our Hon’ble Prime Minister. These trees are:
(i)   “Barga (ii) “Awla”(iii)  “Pepal”(iv)  “Ashok” (v)   “Bel” 
During the periods 28th June 28, 2020 to July 12, 2020 under #SankalpParv campaign of Ministry of Culture, the National Library officials have planted trees. For detailed report, Click Here.
